Advances in Infertility Treatment Offer Increasing
Hope for Those Who Want to Have Babies

Sometimes science takes giant steps, sometimes baby steps, and both can add up to the patter of little feet for people whose hopes of having children were fading.

These strides are both technological advances and ideas for applying them.  Michael Kamrava, M.D., medical director of West Coast Infertility Medical Clinic at 250 N. Robertson Boulevard, cities efforts to succeed with in vitro fertilization but without risky higher-order multiple births.  "We were getting better at doing in vitro, yet at the same time, we had a concern about triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets," he says.

Adopting and Adapting Technique

In 1991, he learned about a procedure for natural cycle in vitro fertilization using only one egg.  Not satisfied with the results, he adapted the procedure to a stimulated cycle, which did produce successful] pregnancies - but also multiple births.

An answer to the dilemma came from agribusiness.  In animal laboratories, nature is given more time to select which embryos will thrive.  "We asked, why not human?" says Dr. Kamrava.  "It worked out great.  We've been very successful.  We have no had more than twins so far."

Higher Pregnancy Rates, Lower Costs

This approach allows Dr. Kamrava to be more selective in implanting embryos, resulting in higher pregnancy rates.  The procedure is done in the office, lowering costs, he says.  Other office-based procedures are also exciting.  One development is precise placement of an embryo in the uterus under direct visualization through an endoscope (TUFT).

Personal Attention

West Coast Infertility Medical Clinic is a small private clinic.  Sharon Winer, M.D., a reproductive endocrinologist, is also associated with the clinic.  Dr. Kamrava performs his procedures on an outpatient basis at The Beverly Hills Outpatient Surgery Center.  This size allows the practice to provide a high degree of personal attention.  Dr. Michael Kamrava offers patients the cutting edge of technology and something more:  "The idea is to keep that human touch."
