The most recent national
data summary for all IVF-related procedures shows
gradual increases in success rates for most of the
assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatments
and excellent success rates for donor egg
IVF. The 1994 ART registry for the US and
Canada reported in the November '96 issue of
Fertility and Sterility, includes the voluntary
reporting of data by 249 programs to the American
Society for Reproductive Medicine. The total
number of successful deliveries reported for all
procedures was 9,573. IVF success rates
(expressed as deliveries per egg retrieval) have
risen gradually from 16.9% in 1992 to 18.6% in 1993
to 20.7% in 1994.
This report confirms previous
findings of low success rates for women over 40
(excluding donor egg IVF). In a comparison of
women under 40 to those 40 and older who underwent
stimulated IVF cycles, the differences are
dramatic: 24.5% deliveries per retrieval in the
younger group compared to 9.0% in the older group,
with no male factor present. The rates of
success are still lower in the presence of male
factor (sperm problems). In women under 40
with male factor present, there were 20.2%
deliveries per retrieval in IVF cycles, compared to
8.5% in women over 40 with male factor
present.
Other findings from the 1994
registry:
Success rates for GIFT and
ZIFT also edged up. From 1993 to 1994, GIFT
went from 28.1 to 28.4% deliveries per retrieval;
ZIFT went from 24.4 to 29.1%. The number of
cycles initiated using GIFT and ZIFT, however,
decreased from the previous year.
Transfer of cryopreserved
embryos resulted in 15.4% deliveries per
transfer.
Cancellation rates of all
procedures are similar: 13.8% for IVF, 12.4% for
GIFT, 13.6% for ZIFT, and 14.4% for donor egg
IVF.
The success rate for donor
egg IVF was the highest reported for all ART
treatments. It rose significantly to 46.8%
deliveries per retrieval in 1994, and there were
929 deliveries from donor egg IVF.
